Chris started his butchery career in his fathers’ business at a very young age and quickly learnt all aspects of running a butchery.  After years of gaining experience, Chris bought his own butchery  in Secunda and successfully ran this until they decided to emigrate.

Chris and Maddie :

In June 2008, we moved to New Zealand with our 2 young children and took over the business “Safari Meats” in Christchurch.

After a while of running the business in its original form (organic meat), we realized that there was a great demand from South Africans (and also ex-Zimbabweans) for the traditional meat cuts (such as whole sheep, hind quarter, meat packs, etc). We broke away from the organic brand and are now selling non-organic, free range meat. We also expanded our South African product range and changed the name of the business to Safari Meats and SA Shop.

We believe in first aging the meat, given that it guarantees a softer and better tasting product. Our aged Rump Steak is renowned and in high demand throughout New Zealand. For a traditional Braai (BBQ), we have a large variety of mouth watering products, for example Sosaties, Pork Neck Steak, Texan Steak, Boerewors, etc.

With our selection of South African products, we try to bring “home” a little closer …. Ouma Rusks, Mrs Balls’ Chutney, Mielie Meal, Ingrams Camphor Cream, Robinson Spices, Koeksisters, Milk Tart and many more heart warming products to choose from.

We all come from Africa and mutually understand the special needs and tastes of that continent ….. and for the locals ….. there is a whole new world of flavours and tastes that awaits you!
